OOX6 Ay•tuǧ

Back after a few weeks hiatus, the OOX Music mix series continues highlighting upcoming Cambridge DJ talent with another guest mix.

Ertug Ay•tuǧ has been all over the Cambridge scene this last year playing at nights from Arcsoc Cabaret to Slipped Disc, Queue The Music and Grandma Groove. Probably more. Knowing this, I'd say that Ertug has a pretty broad taste and music library to boot.

As with all of the guests on the series, I asked him to have a deep dig through his tracks and make a selection that would fit nicely at an OOX event. I'm sure you'll enjoy the results. This eastern & afro-influenced electro/hi-NRG mix has many surprises in store...

In his own words:

To be honest, I don’t come from a musical background at all. My parents tried to get me to learn piano at a young age but I couldn’t be any less interested and unsurprisingly I gave up soon after. At Cambridge I moved from the alt-rock and hip-hop that I listened to as a teen to appreciating the likes of house, disco and techno. I feel Cambridge gets a bad rep for club nights, but throughout my 4 years there, the variety in the scene has been increasing. You don’t have to try too hard to be influenced musically. Because I'm quite an obsessive person, I sort of ran with it headfirst and ended up here!

I was always into film. My first ever ambition in life was to become a director. I think this plays a part in the music I DJ. When I do a set I try and tell a story almost, like the setlist being the musical equivalent of the protagonist’s journey arc in classical cinema, where the pace, style and genres are changing throughout the set as a whole but the theme is sort of constant. I don’t know if I explained that well or if it came off as just some pretentious BS (probably the latter ahaha). Basically, I like to end my set miles away from where it began musically. I tend to start off with some international funk and disco, drift through the realm of italo to hip hop house and then further into techno, breaks and finally into the almost ethereal plain of stuff by soundcloud basement producers.

I wasn’t expecting to do this mix. I thought that after doing the Slipped Disc charity livestream and ending on such a high, that I could park the whole DJing thing for a while and focus on trying to get a job. Old habits die hard, and once again I found myself digging and discovering new tracks that I really wanted to play about with. So here I am, digging further deeper into this obsession than ever before. I’m starting to get into music production so hopefully will be releasing some stuff by the end of this year.

The mix below houses some of my all time favourites that have endured my time at Cambridge and some new tracks that I really wanted to share. Enjoy!
