Olly Schönle is here with a seriously good mix to kick off your week!
In his own words:
My musical life started off fairly differently to the kinds of things I listen to now, as I spent a decent amount of my childhood playing classical guitar and Baroque recorder. I came upon the joys of dance music later – a fairly short-lived career in a prog-rock band led me to adore Radiohead’s electronic albums, after which I discovered Aphex Twin, and then a wide array of techno. From there began my love for a broad range of dance music, all the way from groovy disco and funk to murky techno and breaks. I’d been considering buying some decks for a while, so when quarantine hit, I finally took the plunge and decided to learn how to DJ.
With summer approaching, I tried to use this mix to showcase some of the lighter music I’ve been enjoying throughout lockdown, like Folamour’s smooth new release, which features topical lyrics about life in isolation. I really enjoy his sets too – while his track choices aren’t necessarily always the most creative (having heard him drop that ABBA track exactly halfway through a set on numerous occasions last summer), he brings such an infectious energy to DJing that it’s impossible not to have fun during his sets. I also really like playing the Filipe Mukenga track, which has this gorgeous sun-kissed vibe to it. I’ve shamelessly pilfered it from Palms Trax’s recently live-streamed Boiler Room set: Palms Trax is definitely one of my favourite DJs at the moment, with the depth and variety of his selections always staggering me.
I love sharing music with people and seeing them enjoy it, so I really want to DJ out and about once lockdown is over!
